Sheki and Gabala: doing the classic mountain loop right

The Baku–Gabala–Sheki route is Azerbaijan's signature road trip. Here is how the distances, stops and overnights actually work.

Every itinerary we build for first-time visitors ends up orbiting the same loop: Baku → Shamakhi → Gabala → Sheki and back. It is popular for a reason — but the distances fool people. Here is the honest version.

The distances

Baku to Gabala is about 3.5 hours with a stop; Gabala to Sheki another 1.5–2. Doing Sheki as a day trip from Baku means 8+ hours in a car for 2 hours on site. Stay at least one night — two is better.

What actually deserves your time

  • Shamakhi (en route): the Juma Mosque and a lunch stop — an hour, not a day.
  • Gabala: the Tufandag cable car and the Nohur lake shore. In autumn, go up the mountain in the morning before the haze builds.
  • Sheki: the Khan's Palace is the single best interior in the country — tickets are timed, go early. Leave room for halva from a workshop, not a souvenir shop.

How we run it

Our Heart of Azerbaijan package covers the full loop with hotels in Gabala and Sheki, a driver throughout and the palace tickets handled. Prefer just a taste? The Sheki day tour and Gabala day tour run separately year-round.

Roads are good the whole way and stay open all winter — but from December check conditions for the Tufandag upper stations before promising anyone a summit photo.
