Autumn in Azerbaijan: why September and October are the smartest months to visit
The summer crowds thin out, the mountain roads stay open, and Baku finally cools down. Here is how to plan an autumn trip that hits the best of it.
Ask anyone who lives here: the best weeks in Azerbaijan are the ones after the August heat breaks. From early September to late October the country settles into warm days, cool evenings and the kind of light photographers plan whole trips around.
What changes in autumn
- Baku becomes walkable again. Summer afternoons in the capital can push past 35°C; by mid-September you can spend a whole day between the Old City, the Boulevard and the Flame Towers without hiding from the sun.
- The mountains put on a show. The forests around Gabala and Sheki turn gold through October — the cable car above Tufandag is at its best on a clear autumn morning.
- Harvest season. Pomegranates, grapes and hazelnuts flood the markets. If you see roadside stalls on the Shamakhi road, stop.
A simple autumn plan
Two nights in Baku, then head northwest. Our Gabala day trip works as a taster; if you have more time, the Baku–Gabala–Sheki loop covers the classic route with hotels and transport already arranged.
What to pack
Layers. Baku stays around 20–25°C into October, but Gabala evenings drop close to 10°C and Shahdag lower still. A light rain jacket earns its place after mid-October.
