48 hours in Baku: a first-timer's plan that actually fits in two days
Old City at opening time, the Boulevard at sunset, one evening in the tea houses — a realistic two-day Baku plan from the people who run tours here daily.
Most visitors give Baku two days on their way to the mountains. Two days is enough — if you don't waste the mornings. This is the plan we recommend to our own guests.
Day 1 — the historic core
Start inside Icherisheher (the Old City) before 10:00, when the tour groups arrive. The Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs take about two hours together. Lunch inside the walls, then walk the Boulevard along the Caspian — aim to be near the Flame Towers when the lights come on at dusk.
Day 2 — contrasts
Morning at the Heydar Aliyev Center (the building is the exhibit — give it 90 minutes). Afternoon options split by taste: carpets and antiques in the bazaar quarter, or the Soviet-era architecture walk around Fountain Square. End with dinner and tea in a traditional chaykhana.
If you'd rather not plan it yourself
Our Quick Baku city tour compresses day one into a guided afternoon, and Baku: A Photographic Odyssey is built around the best light and viewpoints if you care about photos more than plaques.
Three practical notes
- Card payments work almost everywhere, but keep small cash for markets and tea houses.
- The metro is fast and costs pennies — buy a BakuCard at any station.
- Friday–Sunday evenings the Boulevard gets genuinely crowded; weekday sunsets are calmer.
